Important Acne Treatment Information

There are many people who suffer from acne, starting in their teenage years, and occasionally on into adulthood. By the time they hit their twenties and are still suffering from acne breakouts, you can be sure that they have probably tried every over the counter cure they can find to treat their acne, with little to no success. To effectively treat your acne, you have to understand it.

Most people who suffer from acne start developing it at as early as age eleven, although in some, it may not show up until around their thirteenth birthday. This type of acne, also known as teenage acne, most normally is caused by raging hormones, and will often clear up on it’s on once puberty is over. A dermatologist can help with treatment for this type of acne, often by prescribing hormone medications or topical creams to help lessen the severity of breakouts, and hopefully, prevent scarring.

People who have acne after age twenty are diagnosed with adult acne, and in some cases, may have to deal with it for the rest of their lives. Adult acne may appear anywhere on the body, not only on the face, so it is important that those afflicted don’t wear tight clothing, as it can worsen the condition.

If you have people in your family that have a history of adult acne, you are much more likely to have it yourself. Women are also much more apt to suffer from acne breakouts in men, especially during menstruation, when hormones run rampant.

Due to the hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy, women who have never had problems with acne before may start noticing breakouts on their face and other parts of their body. The good thing is that these usually subside once the baby is born and the hormones regulate themselves again. The bad thing is that traditional treatment options may not work due to not being regulated for use during pregnancy, so the expectant mother may have to deal with the breakouts on her own.

Another time that women will be more prone to acne breakouts is during menopause, and it is again caused by hormones. Your doctor may be able to prescribe hormone therapy that will help with your acne, as well as other menopause symptoms you may be having.

Stress has also been known to cause those who are prone to acne flare-ups to breakout suddenly. This type of acne is more common in adults than in teenagers, although can be experience by both. If your acne seems to be worsened by stress, talk to your doctor, who can help you learn how to better handle stress, and possible give you a prescription medicine as well.

If you do have an acne flare-up going on, don’t be tempted to squeeze or otherwise mess with the pimple or blackhead. That can lead to even more acne, as well as cause scarring.

There are many over the counter treatments for acne, but it will be a trial and error process to find the one that will work the best for you. If you don’t have any luck with daily cleansing and over the counter medications, then you may need to talk to your doctor or dermatologist for more aggressive treatment options.
